The Truth About Search Engine Optimization

Telling you what you want to hear vs. what you need to hear are often two different things. SEO is one of them. Good SEO is not one time addition to your website. It is a long-term commitment on both the SEO Specialist and the client. Search engines change their requirements, technology is constantly improving (rapidly), web surfers change their habits, your competitors come and go, your products or services change, the list can go on and on. As these things and other websites grow and change, so should yours.

Proper search engine optimization (SEO) is an ongoing process that includes monitoring and making modifications as needed. Your website content needs to be updated on a regular basis. After your website is live, you need to keep “working on” your website. (A great way to do this is by adding blog posts!) The more relevant pages you have on your website containing solid content, the more chances it has of being found. The smaller the website, the harder it is to get it ranked.

One point with clients that we can’t stress enough is that YOU need to be involved in the SEO process. Your cooperation with us as your SEO experts is key to your websites SEO success or failure. If you don’t make the effort, you cannot put the blame on us if things don’t go as you had expected. We can’t pull things out of thin air to improve your ranking. Successful SEO is not just about hiring us to perform a one-time setup, you must keep the commitment and follow through as well.

Successful search engine optimization (SEO) takes time and effort. If you forget to adjust and modify your website on a regular basis, it goes stale and slides into the unknown. There is no such thing as overnight success. It’s hard work and it’s time consuming.

Buyer beware of guarantee’s

It’s very important that you understand that a reputable Search Engine Specialist or company will NEVER make a guarantee of placement or rankings of your website in the search engines. They know that there is absolutely no way to guarantee rankings. If someone tells you they’ll guarantee you good rankings, they are either misinformed or lying to you and you need to run away as fast as you can before you’re broke and blacklisted.

There are those who will claim that they will guarantee you high rankings. Some will even go so far as to guarantee first placement. These companies may in fact be successful at getting your site to the top. When the majority of the time what has happened is that they’ve saturated your website with illegal content in order to sky rocket your rankings. You see your site jump to first place and you’re stoked! But what has really happened is VERY detrimental to your business.

So, what happens?

There may come a day when you can’t find your site, it’s nowhere to be found on the search engines. When you can’t find your site, no one else can either. What’s happened? Your website has been blacklisted (banned) by the search engines! There are numerous sites that have been blacklisted permanently! JC Penny’s was blacklisted for using illegal SEO techniques. If they can get banned, so can you. Trying to get a site off the blacklist of each and every search engine is a very difficult task and there is no guarantee it will ever be removed. If you’re successful in getting the search engines to restore it, you must start all over from the bottom and try to scramble your way to the top using legal measures. The time and money involved in hiring someone to try and get your website off the blacklist can be more consuming than going about your search engine optimization the right way from the beginning!

Repeatedly submitting to search engines

Scandalous companies will tell you they will submit your website to the top search engines, perhaps hundreds of search engines. They’ll tell you that they’ll do this on a regularly scheduled basis and convince you that it’s the way to go and that your website will move right up there into first place. They could not be more WRONG!! Once a website is submitted to a search engine and indexed there is no need to submit it again. If you have good solid legal content, once it’s indexed it will remain indexed. Submitting a website to a search engine more than once can have a negative result in the long run.

What is search engine website and webpage indexing?

Search engine indexing (or Internet indexing) refers to various methods for indexing the contents of a website or of the Internet as a whole. Individual websites may use a back-of-the-book index, while search engines usually use keywords and metatags to provide a more useful vocabulary for Internet or website searching. This means that a website has been included in that search engine’s index (or listing) of websites. Websites don’t just appear in a search engine. They will absolutely and most definitely “float around” in ranking because that’s the nature of search engines. Keep in mind that indexing and ranking are two different things. Your site may be indexed but that doesn’t mean it will automatically rank well.

There are just too many outside factors involved in search engine optimization and ranking that absolutely no one or no machine has control over to accurately guarantee rankings.

If you’re ready to make the commitment to help get your website found and to continue working towards higher rankings, Signature Web Design has search engine optimization plans that will help you do this.
